OTHER WAYS TO RESEARCH SALARY RANGES
-
Ask your networking contacts.
-
Speak with members of your professional organizations.
-
Conduct your own survey by calling similar companies.
-
Ask the staff at staffing agencies you are registered with.
Here is a suggested script for the methods listed above:
Hello. I am researching the local labor market and I wonder if you could give me just 5 minutes of your time? I would like to ask you a couple of questions about jobs in this industry. I do not expect you to hire me. I just need some information. How do you see the local job market demand for a ________________ (job title)? Can you give me an idea of what salary range someone with ___ years experience as a ________________ (job title) might expect? Is there anyone else you would recommend that I speak with to obtain additional information?
-
Read magazines, trade publications and newspapers (i.e. classified ads and the business section) to gather information.
-
Ask at the public library for the following publications:
American Salaries and Wage Survey - Department of Labor
American Almanac of Jobs and Salaries - John Wright
Mercer Survey - William Mercer
