OTHER WAYS TO RESEARCH SALARY RANGES

  1. Ask your networking contacts.
  2. Speak with members of your professional organizations.
  3. Conduct your own survey by calling similar companies.
  4. Ask the staff at staffing agencies you are registered with.

Here is a suggested script for the methods listed above:

Hello. I am researching the local labor market and I wonder if you could give me just 5 minutes of your time? I would like to ask you a couple of questions about jobs in this industry. I do not expect you to hire me. I just need some information. How do you see the local job market demand for a ________________ (job title)? Can you give me an idea of what salary range someone with ___ years experience as a ________________ (job title) might expect? Is there anyone else you would recommend that I speak with to obtain additional information?

  5. Read magazines, trade publications and newspapers (i.e. classified ads and the business section) to gather information.

  6. Ask at the public library for the following publications:
American Salaries and Wage Survey - Department of Labor
American Almanac of Jobs and Salaries - John Wright
    Mercer Survey - William Mercer
