The San Diego Workforce Partnership in collaboration with BIOCOM and the Southern California Biotechnology Center developed the Life Sciences Summer Institute (LSSI) to help increase awareness of the life science industry and related fields of research to students and teachers in the San Diego Region.
Students may obtain an internship position (through an application and interview process) at one of San Diego's world-renowned scientific research institutes, including:
Students gain exposure to career
options, hands-on laboratory experience, work readiness skills, and mentoring by a company or research scientists. |

The LSSI High School Student Research Program
The student internship program includes a one-week pre internship "Boot Camp" training, held either at the Southern California Biotechnology Center at Miramar College or Grossmont Community College, followed by a paid internship at one of San Diego's life science industry or academic research labs, and concluding with the development of a scientific poster.

Teacher Externship Program
| The 12-day teacher externship program includes a one-week "Boot Camp" training, held at Biogen Idec's Community Lab facility, where teachers receive an industry introduction and hands-on laboratory training using the Amgen-Bruce Wallace Biotechnology Laboratory Program curriculum. |
