San Diego unemployment rate decreases to 4.5% in April

The San Diego Monthly Employment Report (March 2016 to April 2016) shows decreases in the civilian unemployment rate, labor force and employment.<--break->” src=”/sites/all/modules/wysiwyg/plugins/break/images/spacer.gif” title=”<--break-->” /></p> <p>The California Employment Development Department (EDD) reported a decrease in San Diego’s unemployment rate from 4.7 percent in March to 4.5 percent in April, below the year-ago estimate of 5 percent.</p> <p>The 4.5 percent unemployment rate falls below the highest April unemployment rate (10.5 percent in 2010) but remains higher than the lowest April unemployment rate (3.7 percent in 2006) experienced in the region over the last 10 years.</p> </p> <p>With the summer tourist season approaching, Leisure & Hospitality recorded the largest month-over gain of 3,300 jobs. Approximately 73 percent of this growth came from Accommodation & Food Services, led by increases in Food Services and Drinking Places (up 1,900 jobs). Construction added 1,700 jobs (primarily as a result of seasonal trends and warmer weather), with Specialty Trade Contractors contributing 65 percent of the growth. Five other industries also recorded employment gains including Other Services, which contributed 1,300 jobs. Three industries recorded job losses, with Manufacturing experiencing the largest employment decline of 1,200 jobs. </p> </p> <p>From April 2015 to April 2016, all but one industry experienced job growth. Educational & Health Services recorded the greatest year-over gain, adding 7,100 jobs to the region. Nearly 96 percent of this growth came primarily from increases in Health Care & Social Assistance, which includes Ambulatory Health Care Services, Hospitals, and Nursing & Residential Care Facilities. Leisure & Hospitality also contributed 6,200 jobs, while Professional & Business Services contributed 5,200 jobs. Information reported no change over the year.</p> </p> <p>According to the United States Department of Labor, employers nationwide added the fewest number of jobs in April (just 160,000) since September. Yet, despite month-over job decreases in three industries, San Diego County continues to experience year-over gains in all but one industry, and its unemployment rate remains lower than the national rate of 4.7 percent.</p> </div> </main> <aside class=
